Azure File Sync support for managed identities is now generally available.
Managed identities provide a more secure method for authenticating to your Azure file shares by utilizing a system-assigned managed identity instead of a shared key.
When you configure managed identities for your Azure File Sync deployment, system-assigned managed identities will be used for the following scenarios:
- Storage Sync Service authentication to Azure file share
- Registered server authentication to Azure file share
- Registered server authentication to Storage Sync Service
To simplify authentication and enhance security, managed identities are now enabled by default for new Storage Sync Services. You can now configure managed identities in the Azure portal, removing the need for PowerShell. This experience will roll out across all regions in the coming weeks.
Azure File Sync with managed identities is available in all Azure Public and Government regions at no additional cost. We encourage you to take advantage of this feature for a simpler and more secure authentication experience.
