Description

Netherite, one of several backend providers supported by Durable Functions, will no longer be supported after March 31, 2028.  For function apps that need the higher throughput benefits previously offered by Netherite, it is recommended that you start evaluating the durable task scheduler as the replacement. Function apps using Netherite will continue to work after March 31, 2028 but will no longer be supported, meaning you will no longer be able to open support cases seeking assistance for your Netherite-enabled apps.

Currently in preview, the durable task scheduler is a new fully managed, high-performance backend for durable functions. Unlike the “bring-your-own storage" backends like Azure Storage, MSSQL, and Netherite, the durable task scheduler is fully managed by Azure, thus reducing operational overhead for the user. Not only is it highly performant, but this new backend also provides more features and capabilities such as an out-of-the-box monitoring dashboard and rich RBAC support.

Recommend action:

Learn more about the durable task scheduler and start evaluating it for the workloads that you’re currently using Netherite for. This new backend is currently in public preview but will become generally available before Netherite’s end-of-support to allow time for migration. We recommend that you wait to use the Durable Task Scheduler for production workloads until after it is GA.
