You can now upgrade your Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server instance to PostgreSQL 17 using a simple, in-place upgrade—now available in public preview. This release allows you to move from previous PostgreSQL versions (14, 15, or 16) to PostgreSQL 17 without changing your server endpoint, reconfiguring your application, or performing manual data migration. The in-place upgrade process is designed to minimize downtime and reduce operational complexity, helping you stay current with the latest PostgreSQL capabilities.
PostgreSQL 17 introduces several enhancements that benefit both developers and database administrators. You’ll see improved performance for vacuuming, query planning, and more; expanded SQL/JSON functionality, including support for JSON\_TABLE; new MERGE command capabilities with RETURNING support; and more flexible partition management. Upgrading also ensures you remain on a supported version, aligned with the PostgreSQL community lifecycle and the Azure platform support roadmap.
This capability is available through both the Azure portal and the Azure command-line interface (CLI), giving you flexibility in how you manage the upgrade process. If you're currently running PostgreSQL 11 or 12, this is a great time to begin your upgrade journey to a more secure, supported, and feature-rich version of PostgreSQL.
