Developers are already using AI coding assistants to build Azure Functions apps today, but the quality of the help varies widely. It depends on which underlying model the assistant is using and how recent its training data is, which means developers often get advice based on outdated APIs, deprecated patterns, or generic guidance that misses Azure Functions best practices.
Azure Functions now provides a set of AI assistant plugins and agent skills in public preview that close that gap. With a quick one-step install, developers can equip their AI coding assistant — including GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Codex — with current, Azure Functions expertise that activates automatically as they work in VS Code, the CLI, and azd. The skills cover the end-to-end developer loop: local setup, project and function creation, deployment with tools, diagnostics for deployment and runtime issues, app health and inventory inspection, and best-practices review of existing Function Apps. They follow the Agent Skills open standard, are grounded in official Azure documentation, and integrate with relevant MCP servers so the assistant always works from the latest guidance and Azure best practices — not whatever its base model happened to learn at training time.
The result is more accurate, more consistent, and more current AI assistance for Azure Functions, regardless of which assistant or model the developer chooses.
