Application: Point of sale (Store Commerce)
When a sales associate selects a dedicated hardware station (HWS) from the POS, the system correctly pairs with the payment terminal physically attached to that hardware station and not the terminal attached to the register. While printer pairing from the selected HWS already works as expected, this change aligns payment terminal behavior to match.
How to use the feature:
The store administrator configures dedicated hardware stations in Headquarters, each with a payment terminal assigned.
The sales associate enables shared shift on their register, except when the cash drawer isn't present, in which case they don't need a shared shift for this feature.
From the POS, the associate selects the desired dedicated hardware station, typically the one nearest to where they're serving the customer.
When the customer is ready to pay, the POS routes the payment request to the terminal on the selected hardware station.
The associate completes the transaction at the customer's location without returning to the register.
Setup and configuration:
Dedicated hardware stations must be configured by an IT admin or store manager in Headquarters before use.
Each hardware station requires an associated payment terminal.
Shared shift must be enabled on the register.
This feature is available by default in Store Commerce after you configure dedicated hardware stations. It doesn't require any additional feature flag.
Business Value:
Retailers operating large store formats increasingly rely on mobile associates who move throughout the floor to serve customers. Previously, even when a sales associate selected a dedicated hardware station away from the register, the POS system incorrectly routed payment to the terminal at the register, forcing the associate to walk back, breaking the customer interaction and slowing down checkout.
With this capability, payment terminal selection correctly follows hardware station selection. Associates can complete end-to-end transactions from anywhere in the store from product discovery through payment without returning to a fixed register. It reduces customer wait times, increases sales floor efficiency, and enables high-touch service models where the associate stays with the customer throughout the entire journey.
For global enterprises with complex store layouts or multiregion deployments, flexible payment terminal selection is foundational to delivering consistent, mobile payment acceptance regardless of where in the store the transaction takes place.
